On March 25th this year, the Liepaja Music, Art and Design Secondary School hosted its "Creative Day," where I had the opportunity to lead a 2-hour masterclass for students from various study programs. My goal was to introduce them to the world of digital fashion technologies and to demonstrate what can be achieved in a short time using modern tools.
The digital fashion masterclass started with a theoretical part, where I shared insights about various digital fashion programs and the skills needed in this field. The participants learned how digital fashion is applied both in traditional garment production and in virtual environments like video games and the metaverse.
After the theoretical part, we moved on to the practical session. The students had the chance to watch the real-time creation of a digital garment*. We invited one of the students to become a model, and together we created a pattern for their jacket directly on a 3D avatar in the software. We added fabrics, modified the pattern, and finally created an animated version of the garment.
Each student had the opportunity to participate and try out different digital fashion tools — from drawing a collar pattern to adding buttons, buttonholes, and creating simple animations. I was truly excited to see how enthusiastic and creative the students were throughout the process.
Of course, there were some technical challenges as well — my laptop decided to randomly lose connection with the large monitor, but the students showed great patience and stayed engaged. This situation proved their genuine interest and openness to new solutions!
What made me happiest was the students' curiosity and their questions after the masterclass. Several of them approached me to learn more specific details about the software, career opportunities, and the practical use of digital fashion. The entire atmosphere at the school was incredibly inspiring — I had the chance to see their creative works in progress for exhibitions and graduation projects, and I was deeply impressed! At the end of the masterclass, we took a group photo together as a lovely memory of this day. I am absolutely convinced — with such creative young people, the future of Liepaja is in good hands!
