Digital Fashion: Sustainability in Fashion and a Solution to the Fashion Industry's Environmental Crisis

The fashion industry has an extremely detrimental impact on the environment. According to Earth.org, 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is produced every year. It is an equivalent of a rubbish truck full of clothes that ends up on landfill sites EVERY SECOND. šŸ¤Æ

While the fast fashion brands are producing twice the amount of clothes today than back in 2000, the number of times a garment is worn has declined by around 36% in 15 years. Simply put, we wear our clothes much shorter time than we used to. The United Nations names the fashion industry as the second most polluting of all industries šŸ

But digital fashion helps us create virtual a.k.a. 3D clothing and thus reduce environmental impact in several ways:

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Reduce fabric consumption and waste

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Decrease water usage

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Lower carbon emissions

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Minimize chemical usage

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Extend garment lifespan

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Reduce transportation emissions

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Promotes on-demand production

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Encourages conscious consumerism

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Facilitates sustainable design practices

šŸ‘‰šŸ» Empowers circular fashion models

Just as 3D interior designers visualise projects to make changes and reach an agreement among the involved parties, digital fashion designers create virtual clothes and help planning the production of garments without the use of physical materials and in much shorter time ā³ļø

I mentioned just a few examples of how digital fashion is transforming the fashion industry and is contributing to a more sustainable future for fashion. But as digital fashion technologies continue to advance, we can expect even greater environmental benefits and a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry šŸŒšŸ’š
